Full Disk Encryption (FDE)
Simply put, Full Disk Encryption (FDE) encrypts the data at the hardware level. What does that mean? It means that data is uploaded onto a hard drive. Only admins are able to read that data.
If you’re not an admin, all you need is a key to decode it. Don’t try to remove the hard drive, you still won’t be able to read the data.
On the other hand, there’s a bright side to FDE. It can encrypt all data. Now, you are likely asking: “Is the process fast or slow?” Well, it all depends on how much data is being used at the same time.

FDE has a lot more benefits, but also some negatives. Here are some of them:
- It encrypts a lot of data. You have to always encrypt your data. All you need to do is add software. Although, this won’t encrypt the bootstrapping
- Not a lot of freedom. Yes, FDE is a lot more automatic than manual. You won’t have a say in what’s being encrypted. But, don’t worry. Encryption doesn’t hurt your data, it only secures it. Also, BitTruster can help manage that data. So that whole ordeal won’t bother you.
- Destroying Data. FDE could write over some of your data, but don’t be alarmed. You can use cryptographic keys to lock the data that you don’t want erased. These keys come with FDE. Never destroy these keys. You never know what sort of accidents can happen in the future. So, why risk it?

Here’s another issue with FDE. It might block the operating system. So, make sure you encrypt that before it starts. You can use your encryption key for this. Just make sure you encrypt it before logging in.
