Are you a California resident? If that’s a yes, then chances are that you have heard of the CCPA.

The CCPA grants you a ton of rights. That way, you can have more say in what happens to your personal data.

But wait, what does your personal data have to do with all of this? Well, a pretty big part of why the CCPA exists. It’s one of the reasons why it’s called the California Consumer Privacy Act.

The CCPA was created so that there can be a lot more transparency between businesses and customers. Now, when businesses collect data, they have to inform their customers that they are doing so.

But, does this law affect the people and businesses that are not Californian? Let’s take a look at that:

CCPA Outside of California

The CCPA doesn’t apply to every single resident in the world. If it did, it would be called the WCPA, which doesn’t really roll off the tongue as easily, does it?

The CCPA applies specifically to California residents. As for the businesses, the CCPA affects businesses that are either in California or the ones who are to do business with California.

You or your business do not have to be physically present in California to feel the effects of the CCPA. As long as your business collects information from California residents, you will have to comply with the CCPA ruleset.

What sort of business does the CCPA apply to? Here’s more about the type of business you need to be in order to be affected by the CCPA:

  • A business that has an annual gross revenue of over $25 million
  • A business that collects, buys or sells the personal information of 50,000 Californians
  • A business that derives 50% or more of annual avenues from selling personal information

That’s all it takes for a business to have to comply with the CCPA.

But, what about the rights that these businesses have to respect? What sort of rights do California residents have under the CCPA that make them unique from the rest of the world?

California Residents Under the CCPA

As you’ve probably gathered by now, California consumers can have a lot of CCPA rights These rights include:

  • The right to request information about their data being collected, as well as why.
  • The right to have the already collected personal data deleted.
  • The right to opt-out of that personal data being sold

Luckily, businesses don’t have to fear these rights. That’s all thanks to BitLocker’s incredibly efficient and free encryption service and BiTruster’s quick and cost-effective management process.

A company’s CIOs and CISOs can truly dodge a bullet thanks to these two services.

But, what about non-Californians? Rights like these make California residents more unique, right? Well, both yes and no.

We’ve already established that the CCPA affects California residents. However, that doesn’t mean that there are no businesses that are expanding the CCPA rights to other people that aren’t California residents.

Big-name companies like Netflix, Starbucks, Microsoft, and UPS are doing just that. The reason why they are doing this is because they want everyone to feel included.

No one would want their customers to feel like the company is playing favorites. This way, they won’t have to worry about that.

Being Safe Under the CCPA

Well, there you have it. California residents are not necessarily the only ones who are affected by the CCPA. The same can also be said about different data-collecting businesses.
